Step 1: Making the Decision to Reach Out 

Deciding to seek therapy can be a huge step in itself. It means you’re ready to prioritise your mental health, and that’s something to be proud of. But we also understand that reaching out can feel daunting, especially if you’ve never spoken to a psychologist before. 

That’s why we’ve designed our intake process to be as clear, friendly, and stress-free as possible. 

Step 2: How to Book Your First Appointment 

There are three easy ways to get started with CBT Professionals:

Step 3: What Happens After You Book? 

Once your booking is confirmed, here’s what you can expect next: 

Confirmation Email 

You’ll receive a confirmation email with your appointment details, location or online link, and any forms we need you to complete. These forms are straightforward and help us understand a bit more about what’s bringing you to therapy. 

Intake Paperwork 

You may be asked to fill in a short intake form. This includes basic personal information, any relevant medical history, and your main reasons for seeking therapy. It helps your psychologist prepare and tailor the session to you. 

Your Chosen Location 

You can choose to see your psychologist at either our Gold Coast or Brisbane offices. We also offer online therapy sessions if that’s more convenient or comfortable for you. 

Step 4: Your First Appointment 

Your first session is a chance for you and your psychologist to get to know each other. There’s no pressure to share everything at once. The focus is on building rapport, understanding what you’d like support with, and beginning to outline goals for therapy. 

Your psychologist may ask questions such as: 

  • What’s prompted you to seek help now? 
  • How have you been feeling recently? 
  • Are there particular situations or thoughts that are causing distress? 
  • What would you like to gain from therapy? 

You can share as much or as little as feels right for you. It’s a collaborative, supportive space designed to help you feel safe and understood. 

Step 5: Planning Ongoing Sessions 

After your initial appointment, your psychologist will usually recommend a plan moving forward. This might involve weekly or fortnightly sessions at first, depending on your needs. You’ll work together to develop strategies, build insight, and track your progress over time. 

You’re also free to ask questions at any stage, including about the therapy process, goals, or treatment approach (like CBT, ACT, or mindfulness strategies).

Common Questions We Hear 

“I’ve never seen a psychologist before—what if I don’t know what to say?”
That’s completely okay. Your psychologist will gently guide the conversation and help you explore what’s on your mind. You don’t need to have it all figured out. 

“Is this confidential?”
Yes. Everything discussed in therapy is confidential, unless there are safety concerns (which your psychologist will explain clearly in your first session). 

“Do I need a referral?”
You don’t need a referral to book privately, but if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates. We’re happy to explain how this works when you get in touch.
